Overview:

The Devs Music, diploma in Music Composition course deals with the fundaments of music making, the structure of sound, and how sounds can be organized in time. Acoustic instruments such as Guitar or Piano will be used as a tool to explore these and related issues. Through in-class performance, various ways of organizing sonic events in time will be investigated. The focus of written assignments will be to develop musical ideas and notation methods that effectively transmit them to performers. All musical backgrounds are welcomed, including students without prior musical training. This is the course for you if you want to be creative with sound and performance. Topics such as Collective Music Making, Sound and Music, Improvisation, visualizing music, instruments training, rhythm, melody, music theory etc will be covered in depth.

After successfully completing the Music Composition course, you will become a professional music composer certified by Devs Music. The Music Composition course involves an in-depth study of:

Term I

 

     DMA 101 -  MUSIC Theory I

In this course, students are introduced to the rudiments of music theory, the fundamentals of functional harmony, and the foundations of Indian and Western Music theory. The course is coordinated with Ear Training I and provides the theoretical background required of the first-term ensemble program.

 

     DMA 111 - Ear Training I

In this course, students develop essential musical skills including aural identification and vocalization of intervals, chords, rhythms and melodies, as well as sight singing melodies and rhythms. Ear Training I is aligned with course content and learning in Theory I.

 

     DMA 121 - History of Indian Music

In this course, students trace the evolution of Indian Music from its roots to the present time through a survey of the significant people, materials, literature and styles that have contributed to its history. In addition, students acquire a working knowledge of the terminology used to describe the performance and character of bollywood music (and other forms of Western music), and develop critical aural skills through extensive listening. Note: Only full-time students admitted to the Music Program may take this course.

 

     DMA 131 - Principal Instrument I

Principal Instrument I is the part where students receive individual instruction in technique and its application to repertoire in either Guitar or Piano. The course consists of individual lessons that primarily prepare the student for two juried examinations: a theory and a practical.

 

     DMA 141 - Ensemble I

The Ensemble courses address style, repertoire, technique, reading, improvisation, performance, listening and other ensemble skills that are necessary for the professional music composition and contemporary popular musician.

 

     DMA 151 - Performance Ensemble

Through focused independent practice, weekly rehearsals and stage performances, each student gets the opportunity to develop and interpret repertoire drawn from Indian music and contemporary popular music. The ensembles vary in instrumentation and size, which are determined by stylistic specificity and repertoire.

 

 

Term II

 

     DMA 102 – MUSIC Theory II

The primary objective of Music Theory II is to expand the students' understanding of the vertical and linear aspects of harmony (chord structure and voicing; voice leading, progression, and function). Students focus on the application of theoretical concepts through writing and analysis. The course is divided into two parts: (1) Western Music theory; (2) traditional harmony and voice leading.

 

 

     DMA 112 - Ear Training II

In this part, students continue to develop the essential musical skills introduced in Ear Training I including aural identification and vocalization of intervals, chords, rhythms and melodies, melodic and rhythmic dictation, and sight singing melodies and rhythms. Ear Training II is aligned with instruction and learning in Theory II.

 

 

     DMA 122 - History of Popular Music

In this part, students survey the history of popular music from its earliest blues roots to current trends. Students are introduced to the performers, styles, genres, and structures of popular music, and develop critical aural skills through extensive listening.

 

     DMA 132 - Principal Instrument II

Principle Instrument II is the second part of learning the instrument Guitar or Piano as selected by the student through individual instruction in technique and its application to repertoire.

 

     DMA 142 - Ensemble II

Ensemble II is the second in a series that develop a wide variety of essential performance skills and abilities within an ensemble environment. The Ensemble courses address style, repertoire, technique, reading, improvisation, performance, listening and other ensemble skills that are necessary for the professional Indian music and contemporary popular musician.

 

     DMA 189 - Performance Ensemble

     DMA 198 - Introduction to Improvisation

This part  introduces the student to the theoretical and practical skills required for improvising on the chord progressions typical of the Term II repertoire. This course is aligned to the content of Ensemble II and Theory II. Topics include chord scale relations (modes and modal harmony, harmonic and melodic minor scales, major and minor harmony), improvising with melodic scales, repetition and contrast, continuity, motive, phrase, and line, meter and rhythm, stylistic nuances, and rudimentary form and analysis. Recordings and transcriptions of solos by master improvisers are presented as models for study.
